synopsis“They killed me, but I survived.”

Three years after Rory Riordan foiled her own murder, she still trusts no one. Not Dr. Z, the eccentric college professor who has taken her under his wing, not Benji, the endearing, attractive classmate who insists on following her around, and certainly not Cy, the beautifully dark and mysterious boy who sits on the first row in Dr. Z’s Astrobiology class and asks far too many questions.

When Rory witnesses Cy being abducted by soldiers in the middle of the night, she finds herself submersed in a world that holds even more secrets than she could imagine–even darker secrets than her own.

From #1 New York Times Bestseller Jamie McGuire, experience the perfect combination of her bestselling books Providence & Beautiful Disaster. This New Adult Sci-Fi Romance is an action-packed, whiplash-inducing roller coaster ride. Page after page, this unpredictable, dark and sexy nail biter will keep readers guessing until the very end!

reviewThere are so many things to love about this book, I wouldn’t even know where to begin. Rory has suffered through so much and believes that she is messed up and is unworthy of love. She her struggle to find understanding for her reason for surviving has made her somewhat reckless. And it is her search for her purpose meaning that has made her strong and independent.

In contrast to her, there is Benjie Reynolds. Benji has hunted Rory “like a bluetick coonhound” since her freshman orientation. He is hopeful, and actually a very sunny character, the exact opposite of Rory. Rory has always known that Benjie has crush on her and she refuses to give in. But Benjie is patient and understanding and he would take whatever Rory can give him. You can’t help but root for the guy. No matter what face Rory puts up, Benjie sees the beauty in her. Like a small ray of sunlight finding its way to the darkness through a small crack.

Finally, there is Cyrus or Cy. A handsome and mysterious young man who joins Rory as Dr. Zorba’s second research assistant. For some strange reason, Rory is drawn to him and she tries to make sense of her growing feelings for him and for Benjie.

When a group named the Majestic Twelve suddenly kidnaps Cyrus and takes the rock, Rory finds herself in the middle of a conspiracy without knowing who to trust. As Rory races to save Cyrus, she discovers the truth about her past and how the people around her are connected.

From here, you’d have to read on. Apolonia is such a well written piece of work, it would not do to ruin somebody’s first read of it. And even after that, I guarantee a re-read would still be a great adventure.

Half of the story will be about establishing relationships, Rory’s past and basically setting up for the action that will happen afterwards. It IS a Jamie McGuire book and she does write excellent romance. But the other half also proves that she can truly write action. The story will just pull you into everything. The action and the characters are so engaging. There will be times where you will share in the anger of not understanding, the rush of sneaking inside for a rescue, shed a tear for a sacrifice and feel the blush of romance.

The story about sacrifice, loyalty, forgiveness and understanding love. It is about about finding a reason for living and believing that every person in our lives has a purpose. It is about reaching out to the light no matter how dark life is. It is Apolonia.
